Chapter Eight

“Are you having any more pains, Tori?”

Aimee Osborne smiled at her. The old woman placed her hand on Tori’s abdomen.

Tori shook her head. “No. Everything seems to be the way it was before.”

“Well, since you’ve had no further contractions, even with all the walking I’ve had you doing, I think it is safe to say you were having false labor pains.

“How can you be sure they were false?”

Tori glanced at her protruding stomach. The pain earlier had sent a jolt of apprehension through her. What if this baby wanted to be born now? Lucas wasn’t here. Not that he’d wanted to be present for the birth, but he hadn’t even returned from his quail hunt to at least be nearby.

“It’s been several hours and you haven’t had any more pains. This is all perfectly normal,” Aimee assured her.

“I didn’t know.” Tori lowered her gaze.

Aimee squeezed her hand. “How could you have known? You haven’t been around many pregnant women, have you?”

Tori shook her head again. Her mother had never discussed such things with her, and she’d lived in the mountains as a boy for years with only her father. There hadn’t been much opportunity to talk about babies or childbirth. Evie, her mother-in-law, had told her what to expect as her pregnancy had progressed, but the subject of false labor hadn’t come up.

“False labor pains can happen anytime during your pregnancy. Some women have them early on, too. The closer you are to the birth, the more likely it is for you to experience them. It’s just your body’s way of preparing you for the real thing.”

Tori frowned. “How will I know when it’s the real thing?”

“The pain won’t stop. It’ll go away, but then it’ll come back, and it’ll come closer together as time goes on. Your water might break. The faster real labor progresses, the faster the real pains will come. I remember having terrible back aches the day I went into labor the first time. But then, I was carrying twins.”

“Twins?” Tori stared at the older woman with wide eyes. “My back doesn’t hurt any worse than it’s been hurting these last few weeks. I don’t know what I’d do with two babies at once.”

Aimee laughed. “Don’t worry, Tori. I’m sure you’ve only got one in there. You’ve got plenty of time before your little one wants to come into the world.” She paused, her eyes roaming over Tori’s face. The old woman’s wise gaze seemed to penetrate right through her. “I’m sure Lucas and Chase will be back soon. I doubt they’d want to stay out in this weather just to shoot a few quail. I don’t think Lucas wants to miss the birth of his baby.”

Tori laughed. “Then you don’t know my husband. He won’t let a snowstorm stop him from going hunting, especially when he’s set his mind to it. If he planned on hunting quail, then he won’t rest until he finds some.”

Aimee smiled. “Oh, I know Lucas pretty well, but I suppose you have a point.
